London Sport consultancy helps primary school fund new all-weather multi-sports facility

A primary school in Thornton Heath has successfully secured over £135,000 from Sport England and London Marathon Charitable Fund thanks to support from London Sport.

St Cyprian's Greek Orthodox Primary Academy had long sought to enhance its sport facility offer and engaged London Sport to provide expert guidance on securing funding.

The funding would ensure new opportunities for physical activity and sport for pupils and the local community by transforming an unused playground with poor drainage.

London Sport worked to highlight the potential to promote social cohesion and help address relatively high levels of crime in the Thornton Heath area through programmes at the new facility.

The team provided primary research, to evidence the need from strategic partners and the local community, and developed stakeholder outlines for impact of the new development on participation in physical activity and sport at the site.

Business plans were created to support long-term financial sustainability and funding applications completed for major industry funder grants.

The success of the funding bids saw £135,000 capital and revenue funding secured to help the Croydon school create a new all-weather multi-sports facility available to the local community.

Johanna Scarry, Business Manager for the St Cyprian’s, said:

“London Sport consultants provided us with excellent direction and insight into the bid process. Our consultant put together and submitted the bids and has been very supportive throughout, including after the award of the grants.

“Transforming the disused site had been the vision of Head Teacher Mrs Baron for several years. We are delighted with the multi sports pitch which has been named Baron’s Court.”
