Fun and laughter at Carnfunnock Country Park

Outgoing Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Councillor Peter Johnston, recently welcomed the Mae Murray Foundation to Carnfunnock Country Park to enjoy a session of fun and activity.

The Mae Murray Foundation aims to allow people of all ages and abilities to take part in activities, experience the world and enjoy friendship together in an inclusive environment.

Councillor Johnston said: “Mid and East Antrim Borough Council are delighted to be in the position to provide a suitable venue for this organisation to meet up and enjoy friendship and experiences in a safe environment.

“We strive to ensuring that our public buildings, parks and spaces are accessible and welcoming to all and I had a lovely morning with the staff, volunteers and families involved in the Mae Murray Foundation down ad Carnfunnock.”

Kyleigh Lough, Operations Manager with local charity Mae Murray Foundation, explains why they have chosen Carnfunnock Country Park as their base for family events. She said: “Many of our families have been shielding and remain vulnerable to risk from Coronavirus. For us, an outdoor setting that offers protection from the elements and has accessible terrain is ideal and reduces the risk of transmission.

Kyleigh continued "A Changing Places toilet, which is larger than a standard accessible toilet and offers hoisting and changing bench facilities is essential to ensure dignified toileting for all, so we are delighted that Mid & East Antrim Borough Council have recognised this need and have supported Changing Places development at Carnfunnock."

The charity is offering inclusive arts-based activities at these family outdoor sessions, comprising music workshops, arts, craft and loose play. A thorough risk avoidance plan is implemented so that families can take part, be active and interact as safely as possible. All ages and all abilities are welcome, but spaces must be pre-booked.
