‘Jaunting Car’ sculpture installed in Larne

A new art installation depicting a life size jaunting car has been installed in Larne.

The artwork was commissioned by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and the Department for Communities.

Sculptor Kevin Killen created the artwork, after consultation with local people, to recognise early pioneers in the tourism industry of Larne, including local Hotelier Henry McNeill.

The installation pays tribute to the jaunting cars that were used to transport tourists from Larne to the North Coast and paved the way for the tourist industry we see today.

The project was developed as part of wider regeneration activity within Larne Town Centre.

Funding of £80,000 for the initiative was provided by the Department for Communities and Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Peter Johnston, said:

“I am delighted that the Jaunting Car sculpture is now complete and has been installed as a lasting tribute in Larne.

“Created by the renowned sculptor, Kevin Killen, the piece marries art, heritage and the unique tourism offering we have in Mid and East Antrim Borough.

“It is a striking new landmark for visitors and locals to enjoy when the restrictions around non-essential travel permit, and a wonderful legacy to a local man who achieved so much personally and for his home town.”

Councillor Gregg McKeen added: “As a Council we are committed to investment in our town centres and tourism.

“This sculpture will be an excellent addition to Larne and a stunning piece of art for the local community to enjoy.

“We would also wish to say a huge thank you for the efforts of Andy King and all at Larne Renovation Generation on this project and for their ongoing commitment to Larne.”

Deirdre Hargey MLA, Minister for Communities, said:

“This piece of art, inspired by the local community, will add to the local heritage within Larne and the wider area. With brighter days ahead of us, I look forward to seeing the sculpture in person.”

The new piece of artwork has been installed at the junction of Pound Street and The Roddens, close to Larne Museum and Arts Centre and Larne Town Hall.

Now that the sculpture has been installed, the community is reminded of the ongoing Coronavirus Regulations for the protection of public health, and encouraged to adhere to all guidelines for travel.
