Press release -

New changing place facility for Ballymena

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council have welcomed the addition of a new Changing Place toilet facility situated in the Tower Centre shopping centre.

People with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well people with other physical disabilities such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis can now make use of the new facility with confidence and ease.

Conveniently located in the newly refurbished extension of the Tower Centre, the new facility is wheelchair accessible and it offers a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench, a hoist system, a screen to allow for some privacy and plenty of space for carers.

In response to a number of requests for a changing place toilet in Ballymena, Council identified these new works commencing and engaged with the Tower Centre management team on its implementation.

Councillor Eugene Reid said: “The new Changing Place toilet facility is an important addition to Ballymena and the Tower Centre management team should be commended for their community-minded approach.

“It is hoped the addition will significantly help people with disabilities and their carers to be able to get out more with the assurance that there are adequate toilet facilities nearby.

“Without it, thousands of disabled people, their families and carers are denied equal access to the services that most people take for granted and we hope to see similar initiatives put in place across Mid and East Antrim.”
