Two of our high streets in running for national award

Two high streets in Mid and East Antrim have beaten of stiff competition to be shortlisted in the Rising Star category of the Great British High Street Awards (GBHS).

Broughshane Street in Ballymena and High Street in Carrickfergus are in the running for the prestigious title which will be announced at an awards ceremony in November.

The GBHS Awards are an exciting opportunity for councils, businesses, community groups and volunteers to learn from the leading examples of the ways in which high streets are succeeding in overcoming the challenges of a rapidly changing environment.

The news of the shortlist echoes the success of Larne High Street in last year’s line-up.

Only four towns throughout Northern Ireland were shortlisted in the Rising Star category with Ballymena and Carrickfergus taking two coveted spots.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Maureen Morrow, said: “I am delighted that two of our streets have been shortlisted in this year’s British High Street Awards.

“Our high streets are brimming with incredible opportunities and potential.

“We have so much to offer in terms of heritage, location and retail, and we are committed on capitalising on our incredible offerings in Mid and East Antrim.

“Our reputation across Northern Ireland is one of a retail centre of excellence, accommodating a wide range of independent businesses, co-existing alongside well-known high street giants.

“I would like to congratulate Ballymena and Carrickfergus on being shortlisted and I wish them the very best of luck with the competition.”
