Further update: Fourth male arrested in connection with serious assault in Birkenhead

FURTHER UPDATE - THURSDAY 17 JANUARY

We have arrested a fourth male on suspicion of s18 assault following an incident in Birkenhead on Monday 14th January.

The 28 year-old, who is from the Birkenhead area, was arrested this morning and is currently in custody where he will be questioned by detectives.

A 25 year-old man who was arrested yesterday has been released on bail.

UPDATE - WEDNESDAY, 16 JANUARY

Detectives investigating a serious assault in Birkenhead on Monday, 14 January have arrested a third male in connection with the incident.

A 25-year-old male from Birkenhead was arrested on suspicion of section 20 assault. He has been taken to a local police station for questioning.

A 21-year-old male and a 19-year-old male previously arrested in connection with the incident have since been released on bail.

The victim, a 49-year-old male remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Detectives investigating a serious assault in Birkenhead yesterday (Monday, 14 January) have arrested two people.

Officers were called to near to the junction of Exmouth Street and Claughton Road at approximately 2.55pm when a 49-year-old male sustained a serious head injury. It is believed that something may have been thrown at his black Jaguar car, before he got out of the car and a struggle ensued between the victim and four males.

The victim was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

A 21-year-old male and a 19-year-old male, both from Birkenhead were arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and have been taken to a local police station for questioning.

CCTV and witness enquiries remain ongoing and detectives are continuing to appeal for information.

Detective Chief Inspector Robbie Moss said: “Our investigation into this incident continues and we remain very keen to speak to anyone with any information that could assist our enquiries.

“I would ask anyone who was in the Exmouth Street and Claughton Road area who witnessed the incident and has yet to come forward, or who has any mobile phone footage, to please get in touch.

“I would also ask those who may have been driving it the area at the time to please check and send in any dashcam footage. You may have captured the incident, or people making off from the scene and your footage could prove as vital information.

“A 49-year-old man has been left in a critical condition and we are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.
