Investigation underway following unexplained death of man rescued from River Mersey

We can confirm that Merseyside Police is currently investigating the unexplained death of a man rescued from the River Mersey this evening, Sunday 27 January.

Emergency services were called to Liverpool Pier Head at around 6.40pm following reports from the coastguard that a man had fallen overboard from a boat in the River Mersey, believed to have been close to Tranmere Oil Terminal in Wirral.

The man was rescued from the water at the Pier Head and taken to hospital by ambulance. Sadly, he was declared deceased a short time later.

At this point there has been no formal identification of the man. A post mortem will be carried out to establish a cause of death, which is currently being treated as unexplained. Witness and CCTV enquiries are ongoing.
