Victim of fatal collision named
Detectives continue to appeal for information following a fatal collision in Merton, as they name the victim.
Twenty-five-year old Marcos Mateus Alves, known as Mateus to his friends, was born in Brazil. He died on Saturday, 29 May in St Helier Avenue.
Two males arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving have been released under investigation.
Detective Constable Chris May, of the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “The collision happened at a very busy location and at a busy time of day. I am sure there were a number of people who witnessed the collision or the events leading up to it.
"I would ask those people in the area or with dash cam footage to contact the police. Your information could be vital in helping us understand the cause of this tragic incident."
Police were called at 16:21hrs on Saturday, 29 May to reports of a car in collision with a moped on St Helier Avenue, close to Netley Gardens in Morden.
Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended. Despite their efforts, Mateus was pronounced dead at the scene at 17:01hrs.
At this early stage, it is believed that two cars were travelling at speed prior to one of them being in collision with the moped. Both drivers have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Enquiries continue.
