Man jailed for fatal hit-and-run following Met investigation

A man has been jailed after causing the death of a pedestrian in a high-speed collision in east London before failing to stop at the scene.

Mayan Hirani, 26 (13.08.1999), of Grange Crescent, Chigwell, was sentenced to six years and nine months’ imprisonment at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday, 10 July, after being convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop.

On Saturday, 16 March 2024, Mohammed Furuk Ahmed had parked his vehicle to make a food delivery in Ilford. As he crossed the road, he was struck by a Range Rover travelling at between 64 and 68mph – more than twice the speed limit.

Despite the efforts of emergency services at the scene, Mr Ahmed suffered catastrophic injuries and sadly died in hospital the following day.

Hirani failed to stop following the collision and drove away. Through CCTV, ANPR enquiries and extensive investigative work, officers traced the Range Rover to a garage in east London. Hirani later admitted he had been the driver.

Detective Constable Tristan Hunter, who led the investigation, said:

“Our thoughts remain with Mr Ahmed’s family and loved ones, who continue to live with the devastating consequences of his death.

“While no sentence can undo the pain caused by Mr Ahmed’s passing, I hope this outcome provides some measure of justice for his family and demonstrates our commitment to holding dangerous drivers accountable.”

In addition to the custodial sentence, Hirani was disqualified from driving for five years and must pass an extended re-test before being permitted to drive again.
