NUS Awards 2012 - Now Open!

Is there a student out there that has changed your life? Nominate them now for the Student of the Year award.

Find this useful? Each year thousands of people work tirelessly to deliver life-changing impacts for students and the public. It’s about time they got the recognition they deserve.

Nominations for The NUS Awards 2012 are now open. There are 14 categories in total that encompass individual and collective achievements, such as the Endsleigh Student of the Year Award, The Club or Society of the Year Award and The Simpson-King Staff Member of the Year Award.

Last year Tayaba Nicholson won the award for Endsleigh Student of the Year.

Tayaba set up and ran a mental health campaign at the University of Manchester that has put the issue high on the agenda of both the university and the students’ union.

By securing more than £2,000, Tayaba commissioned a memorial bench on campus dedicated to ‘students lost too soon’. The bench displays a plaque with various helpline numbers on the front, and on the back is a ‘postbox’ for students to post their thoughts.

Liam Burns, NUS President: “Tayaba is a true example of an outstanding student. Her tireless work has raised awareness and changed the lives of many students.”

Featured as the finale in the agenda for the Students’ Union 2012 conference, the NUS Awards provide a great opportunity to reward some of the outstanding efforts we see every day across the student movement, and have become a hugely anticipated event in the annual calendar.

It's very easy for a college or university student to feel unable to change things. They may feel like an insignificant onlooker when it comes to big issues such as global politics, social inequality and racism, or even when it comes to comparatively 'small' issues such as student housing, bursaries and career guidance.
