Flexible signal marshalling solution for universal I/O systems
With its modular VIP I/O-Marshalling plug-and-play system, Phoenix Contact is providing a flexible signal marshalling solution for universal I/O controllers. The system combines signal conditioning and signal marshalling in one space-saving design. The need for complex marshalling cabinets is reduced. Project steps can be carried out in parallel because signal paths can be planned, installed, and tested regardless of the specific type. This reduces the lead times for complex process automation projects by up to 30 percent and lowers the total investment costs. VIP I/O-Marshalling enables a consistent, universal I/O approach from the field level right through to the control level.
While conventional point-to-point signal conditioning involves sorting field signals by type across different levels, processing them, and wiring them to specific I/O cards, the universal I/O approach eliminates the need for dedicated hardware by allowing each channel to be configured via software. However, the rigid structure in the marshalling and interface levels is retained. VIP I/O-Marshalling combines signal conditioning and marshalling in one flexibly configurable, plug-and-play system for universal I/O controllers. The narrow architecture and compact dimensions reduce the space required in the control cabinet and allow for a high signal density. Supported devices include universal I/O controllers from Schneider Electric, Honeywell, and Siemens, among others. The standard D-SUB interface enables connection to other controllers.
VIP I/O-Marshalling is a plug-and-play system that can be installed without tools, consisting of universal termination boards and pluggable function modules such as signal conditioners, measuring transducers, relays, safety relays, fuse modules, and surge protection. In addition to standard functions, the SIL and Ex i versions ensure functional safety and electrical explosion protection for all substance groups and Ex zones. Depending on the signal type and safety requirements, each channel is equipped with a corresponding plug-in module. The field wiring and power supply can be connected to the termination board quickly and reliably with Push-in Technology. The termination board is connected to the universal I/O controller via a standard D-SUB system cable. With fixed wiring, the signal type can be changed at any time by replacing the relevant plug-in module. This saves on material costs, reduces wiring effort, and prevents wiring errors. Downtimes are reduced, thereby increasing system availability. With VIP I/O-Marshalling, Phoenix Contact is setting new standards in process automation to ensure greater efficiency, plannability, and investment security.
