Netherlands CBI and Campden BRI team up for a second South American New Product Development workshop

Colombian consumers are becoming more sophisticated and demanding when it comes to their groceries. They look for quality, healthy options and new experiences in the more premium categories. Retailers are taking a more active role in recommending products which may be good for consumers and demand innovation from their suppliers.

Colombia has a strong food processing industry, with companies like Nutresa, Colombina, Alpina and many upcoming innovative SME companies. To support the national food processing industry in meeting the demand for innovation from national and international customers, CBI and ProColombia invited two experts from the British food and drink research company Campden BRI. Michael Adams and Sarah Chapman will give a hands-on workshop to a group of product developers from leading Colombian food processors .

A similar workshop was given last year from a group of Peruvian food companies, in partnership with University Le Cordon Bleu, Lima and PromPeru, the national export promotion organisation. A number of participants launched new food products on the national and international market as a result of the workshop. Products launched included ancient grain bars, gluten-free bakery products, nutritional shakes and instant drinks.

This year´s workshop will take place on the 10th and 11th September in Bogota, at the Mariano Moreno Culinary Institute. Participants will learn about market trends, processing technology and product reformulation. It will include a practical exercise to developnew product concepts based on local ingredients, such as ancient grains, tropical fruits, cacao and other Amazonian ingredients. On the 29th the companies will receive individual coaching on their product development projects.

The workshop is part of a CBI export-coaching project that supports a group of Colombian food companies in growing their exports to the European market by enhancing their technical and commercial capabilities. A number of the participating companies will showcase their products at events such as SIAL Paris, Natural Producs Scandinavia, ExpoAlimentaria Peru and Hi Europe in the coming months.
