HARTLEPOOL DIABETES DAYS TO MAKE WORLD OF DIFFERENCE

A leading international diabetes charity is marking World Diabetes Day by coming to Hartlepool to hold three days of special events for the public and an industry day at Tata Steel.

Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF) will be in Hartlepool from Friday 13th November to Monday 16th November. Events range from free lifestyle checks at Lloyds Pharmacy to a Diabetes Wellness Day.

“The public health statistics show there are nearly 5000 people in Hartlepool living with diabetes, with a further 1700 estimated to be undiagnosed,” said Lee Calladine event coordinator at DRWF.

“On Friday 13 November we are at Lloyds Pharmacy at 79 Park Road Hartlepool, TS26 9BT from 10am-4pm. We are looking forward to meeting people who would like to find out more about Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. We will have all our free diabetes leaflets, diabetes necklaces and medical check-up cards. The pharmacists have a lifestyle check to help identify people who might be at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.”

On World Diabetes Day, Saturday 14November, the charity is running its annual Diabetes Wellness Day for people living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes at Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience from 9.30am to 3pm. Places must be pre-booked by email to events@drwf.org.uk, or 02392 636133 and cost just £5 per person. This include all refreshments and lunch. More details are on the web site in the events section at: www.drwf.org.uk

“We are delighted to have the support of the local diabetes teams Dr Sue Jones, Consultant Physician in Diabetes from the University Hospital of Hartlepool and nurses from the specialist diabetes team Lisa Doughty and Pam Stephens as well as the health trainer Pam Cairnes and Lorraine Harrison health and exercise coordinator from Hartlepool Council public health team. We also have Alice Halstead talking about her medical detection dog Holly who helps her to manage her hypocalcaemia,” added Mr Calladine.

“We’re looking forward to a really informative day. Participants always tell us how much they enjoy it and how much they have learned about their diabetes and have improved knowledge about the importance of good self-management.”

“We have a great local volunteer, Hayley Hakansson, who helps to run the Hartlepool Diabetes Support Group. Many members come along to the Wellness Day and Hayley has been working hard to promote the day and spread the word to as many people as possible.”

DRWF will be supporting a Diabetes Awareness Day at Tata Steel on Monday 16th November, working with the on-site medical team at the 42” Mill in the morning and the 20” Mill Medical Department in the afternoon.

Mr Calladine explained: “We are looking forward to supporting the healthcare team at Tata to make it a really helpful and informative diabetes drop in and help raise awareness of diabetes among the Tata workforce.”

The Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF) is a registered charity, established in 1998 to raise public awareness to type 1 and type 2 diabetes, associated complications, treatment, avoidance and relief and to provide support to people living with diabetes. Whilst funding diabetes research we aim to ensure that people are ‘staying well until a cure is found...’

In the past 15 years the UK has seen the number of people diagnosed with diabetes almost double, and this continues to rise rapidly. More than one in 20 of the population now lives with diabetes and it is estimated that there will be 5 million people affected by 2025.

While DRWF is an independent, autonomous charity, working for the benefit of people within the United Kingdom, internationally, Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation exists also as a non-profit organisation in the United States of America, in France under the name "Association pour la recherche sur le diabète", and also Sweden (DWNS). We share the same goals and don’t lose sight of the bigger picture, enabling us to take advantage of our international dimension for the benefit of the charity and our beneficiaries.
