Press release -

Isansys Lifecare partners with KMU4Dementia to improve care of people with dementia

Isansys Lifecare Europe, a new generation digital healthcare company, is working in collaboration with KMU4Dementia to show how vital parameters can be used for mood recognition and to ensure the early recognition of emotional states.

Through the close collaboration with the Helios University Hospital and the IVAM Microtechnology Association, KMU4DEMENTIA and Isansys plan to develop a complete modular system to improve the care of people with dementia in care facilities and hospitals.

In Germany, about 1.6 million people currently suffer from dementia. By the year 2021, according to estimates of the German Alzheimer's Association, about 3 million will be affected. Every year, 40,000 people fall ill, which is equivalent to around 100 people per day. According to current statistics, Baden-Württemberg/Bavaria and NRW are the most affected regions. In North Rhine-Westphalia alone, around 350,000 people suffer from a form of dementia. One third of these persons are moderately to severely ill.

Within this partnership, Isansys Europe will use the Patient Status Engine, an intelligent, all wireless patient monitoring platform to collect and analyse patients’ real-time vital sign data. They will then use this data to develop an Early Warning score which will enable early detection of deterioration and rapid intervention for those at high risk.

Michael Heinlein, Prokurist and Head of Business Development of Isansys Europe, said: "We are working on the development of an Early Warning Score to target group-specific evaluation of mood. Classical vital parameters such as heart and respiratory rate, body temperature, blood pressure as well as ECG can already be measured with the Patient Status Engine today. In the future, however, complex parameters will also be involved, including not only dementia but also pain, dizziness, incontinence and exhaustion. Furthermore, the objective is to measure vital signs contactlessly. This will avoid disturbing patients and reduce stress and anxiety levels at the same time.”

Dementia will be a large topic of conversation during the Compamed Trade Fair which will be held virtually next month. Traditionally jointly organised by Messe Düsseldorf and the IVAM Microtechnology Association, the forum was held for the first time in July 2020 as a three-part digital event series due to the Corona pandemic. Now, at Compamed Trade Fair which will run from the 16th to the 19th November online, much of the focus will be on Artificial intelligence (AI) and how it can be used in many aspects of dementia. It starts with mood recognition, which is difficult because people with dementia often have cognitive impairments and therefore have little or no information about themselves.
