Haringey set for Get Out Get Active with support from London Marathon runners’ fundraising efforts

London Sport is delighted to announce Haringey is one the successful locations that will benefit from phase two of Get Out Get Active (GOGA) to help more inactive people access activity opportunities.

The North London borough’s Disability Network will also receive additional support thanks to the £10,000 raised by our five runners who completed the London Marathon last year.

In addition to the gruelling 26.2 miles, each runner successfully hit their £1,800 fundraising target with the money being invested into the Haringey Disability Network

This funding will enable Haringey’s less active deaf and disabled residents to co-develop and take part in new inclusive activities. These activities will be run by the community, for the community.

Get Out Get Active is a ground-breaking programme, originally created in 2016, to bring disabled and non-disabled people together to be active. It engages the least active communities in fun and inclusive ways.

It strengthens community spirit, increases confidence and improves mental health among participants and increases the demand for, and the accessibility of, a range of different activities.

These may be provided by local authorities, sports clubs or the voluntary sector with particular focus being placed on tapping into people’s motivations to be physically active.

Creator Activity Alliance teamed up with an extensive range of partners in phase one to help Get Out Get Active reach more people across the UK with London Sport supporting activities in Lambeth and Wandsworth.

Phase two, which will commence in Haringey in April 2020, will enable London Sport to build on the initial successes in Lambeth and Wandsworth and share learning with the wider sector.

Initially, 18 Get Out Get Active locations across the UK engaged an incredible 20,000 people. By 2023, Get Out Get Active aims to reach over 40,000 individual participants, with at least four in ten remaining active.

Alex Gibbons, London Sport’s Specialist Advisor for Disability, said:

“London Sport were delighted to be able to work on phase one of the Get Out Get Active programme in London alongside the boroughs of Lambeth and Wandsworth to support more Londoners get active.

“We’re excited to take our knowledge and learnings from that into Haringey to ensure people of all abilities enjoy being active together and continuing our progress towards an Active Inclusive Capital.”
