Young people reap benefits from £24,000 of Satellite Club funding distributed by London Sport

Young people in the capital have been keeping active and socially connected throughout the lockdown thanks to £24,000 of Sport England Satellite Club funding distributed by London Sport.

Twenty existing Satellite Clubs in London have received financial support throughout the covid-19 pandemic to keep young people connected with their clubs despite lockdown restrictions.

As lockdown begins to ease, the retained connections between young people and their clubs are going to prove more important than ever as organisations begin to restart regular outdoor activity.

The most recent Satellite Clubs began delivery at the beginning of the year to create physical activity projects to get young people active in a fun and enjoyable environment.

But all delivery was forced to stop following the government-introduced lockdown with young people also unable to attend school and enjoy the activity opportunities that that provides.

Innovative and creative leaders though, backed by Satellite Club funding, continued to provide support for young people throughout May and June in a variety of ways.

FC Leytonstone began delivery of football and social sessions on Zoom while Hayes School and Beckenham Girls Rugby used funding to pay for coaching and rugby balls delivered to participants.

Funding was also put towards the purchase of equipment to help filming sessions and mental health first aid training to support young people during the lockdown restrictions.

“It’s been fantastic to see the commitment of our Satellite Clubs to continue to engage and provide support to young Londoners throughout the difficulties created by the covid-19 pandemic.

“We’re grateful to Sport England to allow us flexibility with the Satellite Club funding to enable us to continue to support young people through a turbulent through months.

“It’s vital that we continue to support all children and young people across the capital to have the opportunity to form a physical activity for life.”
