Meal for One: Solo dining doesn’t need to be silent dining

From nights away on business to a solo holiday adventure or simply trying out the latest restaurant; there are now more opportunities than ever for people to enjoy a solo dining experience.

Sony has partnered with top food blogger James Thompson (AKA Food Feels) to mark the launch of its WH-1000XM2 industry-leading noise cancelling headphones. James reveals the best places in London to embark on a solo dining experience, as he says; ‘dining out alone doesn’t need to be daunting. I personally find listening to my 1000X can block out distractions, allowing me to savour my meal, whilst the Quick Attention mode feature makes it really easy to hear your server when ordering food.’

James’s top places for solo dining are:

Rail House Cafe is fantastic, especially for a delicious breakfast. It’s a great place to find a nook of your own in a casual, contemporary space. The stylish design and light interior are instantly calming, making it a good place to relax and enjoy your own company. For solo diners who want more of a buzz, the bar area offers plenty of single seats and a lively atmosphere.

Located on the edge of Borough Market, this is the ideal spot for a quick pasta fix. I like to sit at the window and enjoy fresh handmade pasta at its best, whilst watching the busy London streets. The vibrant atmosphere is great for solo diners eating on the move.

A brilliant place for a quick lunch or dinner in Central London, BAO is ideal for solo diners on the move. It's tiny and a great venue if you're by yourself - a better chance of grabbing a seat and diving into their delicious Bao buns!

Some say Ramen should be eaten alone and Kanada-Ya serves some of the best in London. It is one of my favourite spots to hide out and enjoy a bowl of goodness. Boasting a minimal yet comfortable design, you’ll find many a solo diner here.

Sitting at the bar is one of the best ways of dining alone, as you can sit back and soak up the atmosphere. The Palomar has a great dining bar at the front of the restaurant, serving some of the best Jerusalem food in town. Being able to watch the chefs cook up your dish right in front of you is the perfect entertainment for solo diners.

FernandoBacchiega, General Manager at Rail House Café comments; ‘In the last few years alone we have seen a rise in solo diners, as it is becoming more of the norm. In fact, a lot of our solo diners are now wearing headphones when dining.’

Sony’s WH-1000XM2 industry-leading noise cancelling headphones are the ideal solo dining accompaniment; drowning out noise from the outside world so diners can enjoy their meal in peace. They use gesture control to activate Quick Attention mode, allowing the wearer to turn down the volume without removing the headphones, ideal when ordering food or listening to the menu of specials.
