Medicals take on Gosforth in memory of former club president to mark World Stroke Day
This World Stroke Day, Medicals RFC will take on Gosforth RFC on Saturday 29 October, to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association in memory of Danie Serfontein, the clubs’ former president.
An accomplished player and well respected administrator, Danie passed away in July 2015 after a stroke. This Saturday will see the launch of the Serfontein Inaugural Cup in memory of Danie. The two teams will go head to head to raise funds for the Stroke Association, Medicals RFC’s chosen charity of the season.
Medicals RFC will also be officially naming a stand at the ground after their former president in a ceremony at 2:40pm. In addition to the match, which is open to the public, more than 65 friends, family and former players will come together to enjoy a fundraising dinner beforehand, with all funds from ticket sales going to the Stroke Association.
Danie’s family members will present the Serfontein Inaugural Cup to the winning team in a presentation following the match, with a fundraising quiz and raffle afterwards.
Greg Haynes, player and event organiser, said: “I’ve been at the club for seven years and Danie was always at every match. No matter the weather; he never missed a game. We’ve chosen to raise funds for the Stroke Association in his memory to help others affected by stroke to get the support they need.”
Lauren Flint, Community and Events Fundraiser at the Stroke Association, said: “We’re extremely grateful to Medicals RFC for supporting the Stroke Association. Without the efforts of fundraisers, we wouldn’t be able to support the 16,200 people in the North East who are living with the effects of stroke, as well as their families and carers.”
