Brindille: A small blue sprig has touched the hearts of generations

Centuries old and still as vibrant and beautiful as it was on the first day – is that even possible? The answer is a confident “yes” when it concerns Brindille, the small blue floral tendril, which has been blossoming virtually unchanged for more than 200 years. And that on Villeroy & Boch porcelain. This makes Brindille the perfect ambassador for this year’s anniversary, which is being celebrated under the motto “We have been touching lives for 270 years – Savour the moment”. As Brindille has continued to be loved throughout time, with its understated gracefulness touching the hearts of tableware lovers for generations.

The awakening of the small blue blossom sprig
The roots of the Brindille sprig, which is painted in the classic porcelain colour of cobalt blue, go back to the 18th century. Plates were first decorated with the fine sprig around 1735 at the porcelain factory in Chantilly in France. From 1768 onwards, the Boch brothers applied the Brindille on stoneware at their tableware factory in Septfontaines in Luxembourg. The name of the decoration has changed over the centuries from “à la brindille” to “Blue Luxembourg”. The pattern was adapted last in 1967 to the taste of the day and transferred to crockery with a classic, country style shape.

Everlasting beauty: Blue sprig with a twist in 2018
To celebrate its anniversary year, Villeroy & Boch has revamped the tendril by putting it on a sleeker shape, zooming in on the pattern and playing with a white and blue background. At times the blossom sprig is a bold blue on brilliant white and then at other times white on blue – modifying the historical original in a very sensitive, loving and charming way. Treasured for years, the Old Luxembourg crockery is now enjoying a revival and bringing different generations together as the old and new patterns can be mixed and matched beautifully with each other. Vintage or contemporary – Old Luxembourg and Old Luxembourg Brindille can do both. And are right on trend: traditional shapes and decorations are being rediscovered and given a modern twist. What was once a style faux-pas, is now stylish. Anything goes – especially when old and young are such a perfect match.

So when the daughter or grand-daughter is planning a party with the new Old Luxembourg Brindille, the mother can donate her Old Luxembourg pieces. It goes without saying that the cheerful mix & match concept also works on a smaller scale e.g. for a cosy afternoon coffee with a few friends. Or you could add new porcelain to your Old Luxembourg set, such as the practical bowls that are perfect for muesli in the morning and for a one-pot pasta dish in the evening. Use the old soup tureen with the new Old Luxembourg Brindille pattern to add a special vintage look to a simple wooden table. This table setting tells the story of everlasting beauty.
