'Green' screen policy wins award for RAC Auto Windscreens

Top class environmental performance has helped RAC Auto Windscreens scoop a special environment award.

Top class environmental performance has helped RAC Auto Windscreens scoop a special environment award.

The company, which operates a "repair before replace" policy, took home the Environment Award at the recent Commercial Fleet World Awards.

RAC Auto Windscreens has focused on encouraging its customers to seek windscreen repairs before replacement - a more cost effective and environmentally friendly approach to broken glass on vehicles – and almost a fifth of its windscreen jobs in 2005 were repairs.

Mark Hughes, RAC operations director, says: "While the waste from 40 windscreen replacements would fill a skip, the same number of repairs would fill no more than the palm of your hand.

"All our technicians know to offer motorists a windscreen repair rather than replacement, wherever possible, and we have been working hard to promote the cost, time and 'green' benefits of choosing that option. This has increased take-up of repair by three per cent.

"Where windscreens have to be replaced, we recycle 95% of the glass – that's half a million windscreens per year."

RAC Auto Windscreens repair before replace policy is listed on nearly half a million fleet cards handed out to drivers annually. In addition, its free fleet health checks offer a regular technician' inspection to identify windscreen damage.
