Major highways improvements in Rochdale borough are on track

Work to improve more than 300 roads across Rochdale borough is on target to be completed by 2015.

In 2012 Rochdale Borough Council announced that £10m in funding, from both the Highways Investment Programme and the Capital programme, would be made available for improvement schemes over two years from 2013 to 2015.

The borough’s four townships in Rochdale, Heywood, Pennines and Middleton were then invited to submit suggestions for schemes they felt to be the most important to their areas.

The council and townships gave the go ahead to a total of 304 schemes, and 142 of these have already been completed in the first six months (the first quarter) of the programme.

This includes:

  • 52 of the 136 (38%) projects in Rochdale Township;
  • 38 out of 74 (51%) in Pennines Township;
  • 35 out of 59 (59%) in Middleton Township;
  • 17 out of 35 in (48%) Heywood Township.

Councillor Jacqui Beswick, Cabinet member for Place and Regulation, said: “It is fantastic for residents of Rochdale borough that such a huge investment has been made in improving the highway network.”
