Share your World War One commemoration plans

Rochdale Borough Council is asking residents, businesses and local groups for any plans they have in 2014 and beyond for marking the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

The council and their partners are planning a series of events, but now want to hear from local people so they can co-ordinate and promote activities across the borough and beyond.

Councillor Alan McCarthy, Lead Member for the Armed Force said they are also keen for people to get in touch with their WW1 photos, memorabilia, letters and stories:

"We are gathering a picture of the events taking place across the borough to mark the outbreak of the war. We are also looking at helping groups and communities mark the centenary by exploring, conserving and sharing the heritage of the First World War. We are keen to hear about your plans and to hear your stories so we can mark this important period."

Last year the government announced a four-year programme to commemorate the centenary, including educational and cultural activities.

Rochdale’s plans are still being finalised, but will include a WW1 Centenary Schools Poetry Competition and a WW1 themed play performed at local schools. The council are producing a commemorative DVD, recalling the thoughts and memories from veterans and their families, who live in the borough. In August there will be a parade in Heywood featuring the Grenadiers Regimental Band and this years Heritage Open Days will include a wartime theme. An outdoor concert is also being planned together with a celebration event for ex Armed Forces personnel.

Councillor McCarthy said the centenary will help reinforce the boroughs strong historic links with the Armed Forces:

“The World War One Centenary provides an opportunity to further demonstrate our civic support for the extraordinary work that our forces do. These events will give our residents an opportunity to show their support and appreciation for serving and former Armed Forces personnel.”

The council signed the Armed Forces Community Covenant in 2012, aimed at encouraging local communities to support services that promote and encourage activities that help integrate armed forces personnel back into civilian life.
