Press release: Nikita Dhawan will speak at the opening of the Ruhrtriennale

Dear Sir or Madam,
Please note the following press release:

Due to a case of illness within her close family, the Indian environmental activist Vandana Shiva is unable to give the opening speech for the Ruhrtriennale 2018. Instead, the Indian philosopher and gender theorist Nikita Dhawan will speak at the opening of the festival on 9 August (6 pm) in the Gebläsehalle Duisburg. The Ruhrtriennale’s Director Stefanie Carp: “We wish Vandana Shiva great strength in this situation and fully understand that she wishes to stay with her family at present. At the same time, we are delighted that we have been able to obtain such an extraordinary thinker as Nikita Dhawan at such short notice for the opening speech.”

In her speech, Nikita Dhawan will deal with post-colonialism and migration - two themes that also shape the programme of this year’s Ruhrtriennale. Dhawan is Professor of Political Theory at the University of Innsbruck and Director of the Frankfurt Research Center for Postcolonial Studies. Her research focuses on the historical, economic, socio-political and cultural connections between Europe and the post-colonial world. Further focal points of her academic work are transnational feminism, global justice, human rights, democracy and decolonisation.

Following the talk by Nikita Dhawan, at 8 pm, William Kentridge’s new creation “The Head and the Load” will celebrate its German premiere at the Kraftzentrale in Duisburg.

Tickets already purchased for the opening speech remain valid, but will also be refunded by the Ruhrtriennale on request. For this purpose, the tickets can be returned to the booking offices where they were purchased.

Music, dance, theatre, performance and fine arts in the former industrial buildings of the Ruhr Area: that’s the Ruhrtriennale. The venues of the Ruhrtriennale are the region’s outstanding industrial monuments, transformed each year into spectacular sites for impressive arts productions. At the centre of all this are contemporary artists seeking a dialogue with industrial spaces and between the disciplines. World premieres and new works are the essence of the programme which makes visiting the Ruhrtriennale an incomparable event. Every season, festival productions from the Ruhr region go on tour around the world.

The artists and themes featured in the programme are chosen by Artistic Directors appointed in three year cycles. The Ruhrtriennale’s Artistic Director for the years 2018, 2019 and 2020 is the dramaturg and experienced theatre and festival director Stefanie Carp. The programme for 2018 will be announced at the end of April. This year the Ruhrtriennale takes place from 9th August to 23rd September.
