Scandic stands its ground as the best hotel chain on sustainability

For the third year in a row, Scandic has been voted the most sustainable hotel chain by the 9,000 Swedish consumers who participated in Sustainable Brands*, the annual survey that ranks how companies work on environmental and social responsibility. In total across all sectors Scandic comes in 16th place out of 228.

The accolade confirms that Swedish consumers see Scandic as the hotel chain that is best in Sweden overall at taking environmental and social responsibility. Scandic has succeeded in getting its message across to a wide audience and the consumers who have got the message largely find it a positive one.

"In the past year we’ve put a number of measures in place to make our hotels even greener and more socially responsible. It’s particularly rewarding to see this bearing fruit – and that Swedish consumers recognise our work on these issues. Our television purchasing process, for example, led to more ecolabelled televisions being available in the general market. Seeing what we do having a more widespread impact is inspiring," says, Inger Mattsson, Director Sustainable Business, Scandic.

Back in 1993 Scandic started to develop what is today the leading sustainability programme in the industry, in which sound environmental, economic and social aspects are integral to day-to-day decision-making.

"Scandic is once more one of the top companies in the survey and is the top-ranked hotel chain in Sweden. In the other Nordic countries too we see Scandic noted as one of the most sustainable companies," says Erik Hedén, Sustainable Brand Index.

About the survey*
Sustainable Brand is a survey carried out every year in which consumers assess the most sustainable brands in the Swedish market. The survey is founded on the UN’s Global Compact guidelines which set out how companies are to work on environmental responsibility, for human rights, better working conditions, and anti-corruption.

This year 9,000 Swedish consumers answered questions on what they think of and how they rate the environmental and social responsibility efforts of 228 brands in 18 sectors. The survey was run as an online survey in December 2012 and January 2013.

The aim of the survey is to show the importance of working on sustainability issues in a business-oriented manner and the way these are communicated.
