BBC6 MUSIC STAR VOTED BEST NEW RADIO TALENT WHILST UNCERTAINTY LOOMS OVER FUTURE OF THE STATION

Ex-Brit pop favourite and new BBC 6 Music regular, Jarvis Cocker has scooped this year’s Sony DAB Rising Star Award at the 28th annual Sony Radio Academy Awards on the 10th May 2010.

The former Pulp front man turned successful solo star has been hosting the Sunday Service on BBC6 Music since January this year, and the accolade couldn’t come at a better time for the station as the BBC undergo a review of its services.

The UK’s most prestigious industry radio honours took place at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.  Jarvis triumphed over four other nominees winning the night’s only people’s choice award which was presented to him by the gorgeous Frankie Sandford from successful all-girl pop group, The Saturdays.

This year’s eclectic mix of nominees shortlisted alongside Jarvis have all been on air for less than 18 months and were selected  by a panel of industry experts.  They include former politics student turned stand-up comedian, Max Dickins who currently has his own show on Absolute Radio show, Lucy Jones from 107.6 Banbury Sound who is boosting listener figures with her energetic banter, BBC Asian Network’s celebrated early morning presenter, Waqas Saeed, and Manchester newcomers James Lister & Dave Chipman, a couple of mates who stumbled onto the Silk FM airwaves much to the delight of their listeners.

The judging panel shortlisted Jarvis Cocker for his distinctive presenting method and for advocating new music which they claimed made him one of the stand-out entries. The voting public clearly agreed as thousands flocked online to support their favourite up-and-coming radio presenters.  Former winners include George Lamb who took the prize in 2008 and Singing Henry, Kerrang’s signing travel reporter who was crowned the Sony DAB Rising Star last year.

Steve Dowdle, Managing Director of Sony UK said:

“For the third year running, the Sony DAB Rising Star Award has celebrated and recognised the best and most talented emerging broadcasters that this country has to offer, and this year is no exception.  We’d like to congratulate Jarvis Cocker on winning the Sony DAB Rising Star Award for 2010, particularly during this time of uncertainty for the station. His engaging and unique style, coupled with his music taste and knowledge makes Jarvis a big favourite and has allowed him to walk away with this year’s people choice award.”
