A 61 year old British man has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates for anti-anxiety medication that is legal in the UAE with prescription because a customs officer believed he had ‘too many pills’. Jamie Harron has been stuck in Dubai for over 5 months, following allegations of brushing past a German man in a crowded bar. Jamie has 2 open cases against him in Dubai. The 1st was for brushing past a man and the second was a rude gesture + drinking alcohol. 1st is not heard yet. The 2nd was in absentia. He was sentenced to 30 days prison for the rude gesture, a 2000 AED fine (£400) + deportation. His lawyers have appealed. Jamie denies the rude gesture and indecent behaviour but admits drinking alcohol.

Interpol is allowing itself to be illegally used as a debt collection agency by UAE banks. The UAE is a generous contributor to Interpol's coffers, having pledged $54 million in 2016. Brits who miss a credit card or loan payment and leave the country have their debt falsely classified as fraud by the UAE so they can list the defaulter with Interpol for the purposes of extradition.

Australian Shane Nelson was the CEO of Westpac Bank, and is now the CEO of Emirates National Bank of Dubai. He claims he wants to see debt decriminalised in the Emirates, a popular expat destination. His bank though is one of the worst abusers of criminal law in the UAE. They continue to jail debtors, illegally and aggressively harass and threaten Interpol and extradition.
