Radha Stirling and David Haigh recently appeared together in the Edinburgh Sheriff Court, where they have been continuing their work fighting against the extradition of a Scottish man to the UAE. They have been providing expert witness testimony in a hearing that will determine whether or not Scotland will concur with the UK in denying extradition to the Emirates over human rights concerns.
Mr Haigh brings with him 17 years of legal experience practising in leading law firms in London and the Middle East. Mr Haigh was a finalist in the Lawyer Magazine and Legal Week ‘lawyer of the year’ and ‘in house counsel of the year’ for both London and the Middle East.
Ms Stirling founded Detained in Dubai ten years ago and has advised over 6000 clients on disputes, both civil and criminal in Dubai.
Ms Stirling said “Stirling Haigh is a London based international dispute resolution, crisis management and strategic advisory firm specialising in a range of criminal and civil disputes in Dubai, the wider UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia. David and I are already considered leading authorities on UAE criminal and civil law and its justice and prison system. We consult to businesses, entrepreneurs, international law firms, charities, NGOs, politicians and media on legal issues in all of the Gulf countries.”
Together, Ms Stirling and Mr Haigh will be offering their unique & proven successful approach to solving disputes in the Gulf Region as well as continuing their independent work as Detained in Dubai and Mr Haigh’s work in football.
This new collaboration is in response to a large increase in the volume of work in this field. Stirling Haigh has been established to address a growing need for independent and competent UAE legal advisors as more and more people come forward about injustices they have suffered in the UAE.
“I am very happy to be returning to law and delighted with my new partnership with Radha Stirling. Radha has been the cornerstone of the not for profit legal market in Dubai over the last decade. I look forward to working together in the future. A top priority for Stirling Haigh in the near future will be lobbying the UK government to suspend its extradition treaty with the UAE in light of the proven risk of human rights abuses such as torture and unfair trials, something I have experienced. Another top priority for Stirling Haigh is to ensure that every person in the UAE has access to legal advice for criminal cases in the UAE and we look forward to launching our pro bono programme, DU Justice.” says David Haigh.
Radha Stirling adds “I look forward to this dynamic and energetic partnership with David Haigh and what we will achieve together. After ten years operating as Detained in Dubai I welcome this opportunity for growth and development. Together we are stronger and our skills base wider, we will be able to help more people and fight more cases together. It is fantastic to be able to add David’s vast Middle experience to the growing team at Detained in Dubai and the extradition hearing in Edinburgh showed that’s David first-hand knowledge of the Dubai legal system is invaluable to our clients”.
Ms Stirling continues, “I am happy to say that the team at Detained in Dubai is growing fast. The range of services and expertise we offer as a result has broadened, as we grow we are becoming even more effective. The new partnership with David will add greatly to our potential.”
