Fitness professional Jordan Branford, 44, from Eugene, Oregon in the USA used the word “bitch” on Instagram, and is now facing 7 years in a harsh, notoriously violent desert jail. In the Middle Eastern state of Dubai, “bitch” can be interpreted as an offensive word, even when not directed at a specific person; and in the UAE is subject to criminal sanctions.

A 61 year old British man has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates for anti-anxiety medication that is legal in the UAE with prescription because a customs officer believed he had ‘too many pills’. Perry only had enough to last him for his 6 month voyage at sea; but to no avail. Perry is now detained in Dubai and denied not only his medication, but even treatment for his prostate cancer.

Malaysian citizen Richard Lau has been detained in the UAE for almost a year for receiving wages. He has been detained pending investigation, with his detention regularly being renewed as the Ras Al Khaimah authorities have not been able to find or produce evidence to charge him with any crime. Innocent Malaysian jailed 8 months in Dubai for being paid his wages. The project director was caught in the crossfire of an argument between the Emirati owner of the subsidiary and the parent company. One party argued that the work was not approved, and so any wages paid were deemed to be "stolen." The workers had no idea about the dispute and thought they were working/being paid as normal.

Richard Lau was arrested last April with several others, based on accusations from an Emirati businessman that Richard’s salary and commissions constitute embezzlement from his company. Despite no evidence of wrongdoing, Richard’s detention is extended every two weeks as the Public Prosecutor requests more time to investigate. Every accused party has been released while Richard stays in jail.

21 year old Asa Hutchinson tells Detained in Dubai she was leaving a brunch with a group of visiting friends when she witnessed an argument between some boys who were in her party and an older, drunk man who had been asleep on a couch in the hotel lobby. ​David Oliver, an American former university professor is a stroke victim with mental health issues. David lost his job teaching in the UAE and was left unable to keep up his loan payments. Now, at the age of 62, he has no money to pay, can't get another job in the UAE (ironically because of the police case against him for missing loan payments), and is forbidden to leave the UAE ever again

Jamil Mukadam one of the many recent high profile Brits detained in Dubai for seemingly trivial offences has been released, but the UAE has not done so in good grace. Mukadam was told by his management that although, under worldwide pressure, the Dubai authorities let him go they have also secretly placed on an Interpol watch list, meaning his UK government job is at risk.
