Unmarried adullts 'are more likely to die from stroke' - the Stroke Association comments

Researchers at Duke University in North Carolina say that the main reason married people tend to do better following a stroke is because they have someone to look after them, following a new study.

Commenting on the news, Richard Francis, Head of Research Awards at the Stroke Association, said: “For many years, scientists have been trying to work out whether our relationship status can play a role in our health. This latest study adds weight to previous research which suggests a link between a person’s marital status and their recovery following a stroke.

“There are a number of factors which could contribute to this. We know that psychological and behavioural support are vital for people rebuilding their lives after a stroke, and a stroke survivor’s financial stability also has a role to play in their recovery.

“A stroke can happen to anyone at any time, regardless of their relationship status. There are simple steps we can take to reduce our risk of stroke, such as eating a balanced diet, taking regular exercise and having regular blood pressure checks. Anyone with concerns about their risk of strokes should discuss with their GP. To find out more, visit stroke.org.uk.”
