Burton and District Stroke Club wins national award
Burton and District Stroke Club, based in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, has been recognised for the
support and advice they offer local stroke survivor with a Life After Stroke Award. The Club was presented with the Stroke Association’s Stroke Group Award by ‘How Clean Is Your House’ star Kim Woodburn at a star studded ceremony in London on 12 June.
Colin Williams, Chairman of the Burton and District Stroke Club, collected the award on behalf of its members. He said: “I joined the Burton and District Stroke Club in 1975, and it’s incredible to think of the all the stroke survivors who we’ve helped over the last 39 years. Our aim is to show people that anything is possible, and a stroke should not stop you from enjoying life.
“We go out regularly on trips to the theatre, organise games evenings and do as much as we can to learn from and support each other. We rely on fundraising activities to keep the Club going; last year we raised over £2,000 through the generosity of the local community. We’re all absolutely ecstatic with our award; we just hope we can do even more to help local stroke survivors and their families in the years to come.”
The Stroke Association’s Life After Stroke Awards, sponsored by TONI&GUY Charitable Foundation, recognise the courage shown by stroke survivors and carers as well as the great work and commitment shown by health professionals, groups and supporter organisations.
Jon Barrick, Stroke Association Chief Executive, commented: “A stroke can all too often leave people feeling isolated from their local community. The Burton and District Stroke Club reaches out stroke survivors when they’re at their most vulnerable, providing vital support and ensuring people can make their best possible recovery. Well done to the Club: a well-deserved Life After Stroke Award winner.”
