Elland Estate Agent raises £665 in her Mum’s memory

Elland estate agent Ami Baxter has raised £665 for the Stroke Association, after a year of fundraising for the charity.

Ami was inspired to raise funds by donating £5.00 to the Stroke Association for every house she sold in 2015 in memory of her mum, Sue, after she passed away two years ago this month.

Ami has also held open evenings and other fundraising events throughout the year to reach her current total. Ami marked the two year anniversary by presenting the Stroke Association with a cheque for the money raised.

Ami, 29, is the recent owner of Baxter Estate Agents, based at 67 Southgate in Elland. Her mum had a stroke in December 2013 at the age of 64, which was caused by a bleed on the brain. After 16 weeks in hospital, Sue sadly passed away, leaving Ami devastated.

Ami said: “It was absolutely heart-breaking. After my mum had her stroke, it was like she was a different person; it affected her in many ways. Her characteristics changed, which was extremely hard to accept. I often slept by my mum’s bedside while she was in hospital. It was so sad to see patients on the ward who had been affected by stroke so severely, and in many different ways.

“Before my mum had her stroke, I didn’t know much about the condition apart from having seen the FAST advert on television, so I’m keen to raise as much awareness as I can. The passion I have for my work is even bigger now I donate to a cause that is close to my heart each time I sell a house. The Stroke Association is an incredible charity and provides invaluable support to stroke survivors and their families.”

Jo Beverley, Regional Fundraiser at the Stroke Association, said: “We’re extremely grateful to Ami at Baxter Estate Agents for supporting the Stroke Association. Without the efforts of fundraisers like Ami, we wouldn’t be able to support the 112,300 people in Yorkshire and Humberside who are currently living with the devastating effects of stroke, as well as their families and carers.”
