John Lewis Liverpool receives regional recognition from the Stroke Association

The John Lewis shop in Liverpool has received a Life After Stroke Award from the Stroke Association, in recognition of their continued support.

Tony Sim, the store’s Head Chef, and Faye Mines, Community Liaison Coordinator, were presented with the Corporate Partnership award by the Stroke Association at the celebratory event in Manchester, on Thursday 22 September.

The partnership with the charity began when Tony joined the Stroke Association team in Liverpool for 18 weeks on secondment, as part of the John Lewis Golden Jubilee Trust Scheme. Tony volunteered across the charity’s local voluntary groups, service groups and at events such as the UK Stroke Forum.

Tony also encouraged other chefs in his store to support the Stroke Association’s fundraising initiatives including Give a Hand Week in October 2015, when he and his colleagues made cupcakes using their non-dominant hand.

From there the partnership went from strength to strength, with the shop providing the charity with space in store to fundraise, and holding blood pressure awareness events.

Chris Larkin, Regional Director at the Stroke Association, said: “Our Life After Stroke Awards highlight the tremendous courage local people have shown in rebuilding their lives after a stroke, or in helping others to do the same. The team at John Lewis Liverpool have gone above and beyond to make sure that others are aware of stroke and the Stroke Association.

“During our national awareness month, Make May Purple, the John Lewis team sold one hundred purple flower pins during lunchtime, planted purple flowers on the leisure roof and baked purple cakes. The shop also welcomed our local team to host another Know Your Blood Pressure event, taking the number of people checked to over 200.

“The partnership is not over yet, with events already planned for the forthcoming months. We’re thrilled to present this award to John Lewis Liverpool, to thank everyone for their support over the past 12 months.”

Mark Blundell, Head of Branch at John Lewis Liverpool; said: ‘We are truly honoured to receive such a fantastic award from the Stroke Association, and I would like to personally thank the team at the charity for taking the time to visit the branch and help to raise awareness of such an important cause.’

Tony and Faye accepted the certificate on behalf of John Lewis Liverpool at a celebratory event at the AJ Bell Stadium in Salford on Thursday 22 September, which was supported by Bayer. The certificate was presented Elaine Roberts, Director of Life After Stroke Services at the Stroke Association.

The Stroke Association’s Life After Stroke Awards recognise the courage shown by stroke survivors and carers as well as the great work and commitment shown by health professionals, groups and supporter organisations. For more information visit www.stroke.org.uk/LASA
