Oxford Grove Primary School pupils help to conquer stroke

Pupils at Oxford Grove Primary School have shown their support for the Stroke Association, by raising more than £1,500 to help conquer stroke.

The school got behind the Stroke Association’s annual awareness month: Make May Purple, by hosting a series of fundraising activities, including a pyjama party.

Year 5 and 6 pupils were also visited by Scott Smith, Community Development and Partnerships Manager at the Stroke Association, who delivered a stroke awareness session with the children on Friday 27 May. Pupils learnt how stroke can affect a person’s brain, as well as how to spot the symptoms of stroke and act FAST.

Scott Smith, Community Development and Partnerships Manager at the Stroke Association, said: “With around 152,000 strokes a year in the UK – that’s around one every three and a half minutes - it is vital we have people who can raise funds for people affected by stroke. We’re extremely grateful to the staff and students at Oxford Grove for their support. The funds raised will help us to prevent strokes and reduce their effect through campaigning, education and research. It will also to help support people in the North West who are rebuilding their lives after stroke

“It’s hugely important to educate about stroke prevention and raise awareness of this devastating condition. Our awareness session gave us the chance to teach students about stroke, by making neurons out of pipe cleaners. As a result, the children now know how to how to act FAST and it was great to see them asking some incredibly inquisitive questions.”

A spokesperson from Oxford Grove School Council, said: “A number of children at Oxford Grove have experienced the impact of stroke in their families and are we are therefore very proud to have raised so much money for the Stroke Association. We hope this money will help to save lives and prevent strokes happening in the future.”

The Stroke Association has been calling on everyone to sign up to Make May Purple in 2016. To find out more about Make May Purple, please visit www.stroke.org.uk/makemaypurple
