Stroke Association puts the pressure on Saints RLFC

Players at Saints RLFC teamed up with the Stroke Association to tackle one of the biggest risk factors for stroke: high blood pressure, by having blood pressure tests at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Monday 03 September.

Over half of all strokes are caused by high blood pressure and yet it is estimated that over five million people across the UK don’t realise they have the condition. A stroke is a brain attack which happens when the blood supply to the brain is cut off, caused by a clot or bleeding in the brain. There are more than 100,000 strokes in the UK each year; that is around one stroke every five minutes.

Players and coaches from Saints RLFC had their blood pressure checked, to raise awareness of the importance of knowing your numbers.

Marie Powner, Stroke Association Support Coordinator, said: “High blood pressure normally doesn’t have any symptoms and it’s much more common than people think. That’s why we urge as many people as possible have theirs checked at their nearest Know Your Blood Pressure event. It’s quick and easy and it could save your life. We’re really grateful to Saints RLFC for helping us to raise awareness.”
