Stroke Association responds to Royal College of Radiologists' report

Stroke Association’s response to the Royal College of Radiologists’ Clinical Radiology UK Workforce Census 2020 Report.

Charlotte Nicholls, Head of Policy at the Stroke Association said: “We urgently need to close the gaps in the radiology workforce, through working with the Government and professional bodies to train new radiologists and upskill existing clinicians. This is vital so that more people can benefit from miracle stroke treatments like thrombectomy.

“Over 10,000 stroke cases a year would benefit from thrombectomy, a procedure in which a qualified interventional neuroradiologist mechanically removes a blood clot from a patient’s brain. This procedure can mean the difference between death or a life of severe disability, and walking independently out of hospital in a few days. However only of fraction of eligible procedures actually happen and this report shows us one of the biggest reasons for this - there aren't enough radiologists. More than 8,400 stroke patients miss out currently, meaning that that your care depends on where you live, or when you have your stroke.”
