Team Greenie take on Thames Bridges Bike Ride for stroke

Stroke survivor Peter Green, his nephew, and three friends dubbed as ‘Team Greenie’ are taking on the Thames Bridges Bike Ride on Sunday 11 May 2014 to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association.

Peter Green (44), from Islington, will face the 50 mile ‘Extended’ route together with friends and family, cycling over 16 bridges across London.

Last August, Peter, a retired city trader, lost feeling in his left arm and hand. Peter began feeling unwell and his wife realised that something was wrong so she called 999. Peter said: “I now understand how important it is for others to understand the signs of a stroke and to act fast. I’ve always led a busy and sociable lifestyle, so when I had my stroke it was a huge shock. This is a big challenge to take on, but I’m determined to do it. The Stroke Association supports survivors and their families, and I want to make sure they can continue their vital work.”

Team Greenie has risen over £3,000 for the Stroke Association, already beating their £2,000 target. Peter adds: “In the weeks after my stroke, learning basic skills like writing and tying my laces was a challenge in itself, so the thought of riding a bike was a faraway one. I’ve been determined and dedicated to my training, and had great support and care from loved ones. Through physiotherapy and a lot of patience, I’m thankful to have made a strong recovery.”

Funds raised through the Thames Bridges Bike Ride will support stroke survivors and their loves ones across the UK. There are three routes people can sign up to:

  • The Family Route – 8 mile circular route from Ham Common to Hurst Park
  • The Standard – our classic 33 mile ride which includes 16 bridges
  • The Extended Route – the longest and most challenging of the three routes

Julia Selby, Events Manager, for the Stroke Association in London, said: “There are around 13,500 people who have a stroke every year in London and over 128,000 people are living in London with the effects of stroke. We’re a charity that relies on people like Peter and his team of friends and family to raise funds so we can be there for as many people as possible whose lives have been changed by stroke.”
