Young Doncaster stroke survivor set to tackle York 10K

Hannah Burton, a 19 year old stroke survivor from Doncaster, is set to help conquer stroke by taking part in the York 10k on Sunday 02 August, to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association.

In July 2014, Hannah had a stroke aged just 18. The stroke left Hannah unable to use her left leg, left arm and hand, and with problems with her memory and communication. Even brushing her teeth was so exhausting she would have to take nap to recuperate.

Hannah now has made an astonishing recovery and over the next few months she has set herself a series of goals, including completing a run. In August 2014 Hannah was struggling to walk 10 metres, yet this August Hannah will take on the York 10k to prove how far she has come in her recovery.

Hannah said: “I’ve never done anything like this before. Before my stroke, I never ran at all and when I started training I was struggling to get to the end of the road. I train three times a week, but I sometimes still struggle with tiredness. I have two friends running alongside me on the day, Abi and Bridie, and we’re all raising money for The Stroke Association as they’ve seen how much they’ve helped me.

“The charity has given me information, support and a friendly face on so many occasions in the past few months. They've helped me understand and come to terms with my life after stroke, as well as prepare me for the future. This is going to be a massive achievement for me, I’m really looking forward to it, and I hope to help other people see that there is life after stroke.”

Jo Beverley, Regional Fundraiser at the Stroke Association, said: “With around 152,000 strokes a year in the UK – that’s around one every three and a half minutes - it is vital that we have people like Hannah to help raise funds. We’re really grateful to Hannah for all her support and it’s wonderful to see how far she has come; she’s a real inspiration. The funds raised will help ensure we can be there for even more families affected by stroke.”
