PHASMOPHOBIA’S PLAYER CHARACTER UPDATE LANDS IN-GAME

Players can now customise their character for the first time, and experience all-new animations, including enhanced interactions for an even more thrilling hunt!

SOUTHAMPTON, UK – May 5th, 2026 – Today, Kinetic Games is pleased to announce that the highly anticipated Player Character Update is now available in Phasmophobia, as a free update across all platforms. Ghost hunters will be able to experience more immersive hunts, with the update bringing a host of changes ahead of the game’s 1.0 launch, including completely re-imagined character models with new animations, customisation options and more.

One of the biggest changes the major overhaul brings is that players will now have a body. Teammates can now see what their fellow ghost hunters are holding without needing to ask, and players will be able to move through environments in ways that feel more physical.

New animations will also introduce more dynamic, realistic movements and remove quirks - like the bendy backs - for even scarier ghost hunts. Players can expect new death, revival and EMF animations, which were previously teased in Phasmophobia’s 2026 Roadmap.

Interactions have also been enhanced, with unique animations for equipment and objects, for an even more immersive experience. This includes the Journal, which will now feature in-game when used rather than as a separate UI item.

Alongside this, a new item, the player watch, can now also be accessed during investigations via the Journal or when the player’s left hand is empty. It will allow players to monitor sanity levels while also keeping track of time elapsed during a contract.

The update also expands personalisation, with 12 new character models to choose from, each customisable with clothing, hair colour, accessories and more.

All cosmetics can either be unlocked through gameplay challenges or purchased via the in-game store in the lobby, which will be entirely run on in-game currency, and will have new items added in future updates.

As part of the build up to its awaited 1.0 release, the update also introduces the addition of backstories for the player characters. Curious players will be able to discover a bit more about who the GHD company are, how they ended up working as ghost hunters, and why…

“Whilst the old character models have their own charm, the Player Character Update will make ghost hunts even more immersive,” said Corey Dixon Art Director at Kinetic Games “Movements feel more realistic with new animations, and even though we’re saying goodbye to the bendy backs, we hope the extra scares make up for it!”

Phasmophobia’s Player Character Update is now available for free on all platforms. Phasmophobia is available in Early Access on PC via Steam, PS5, PS VR2, and Xbox Series X|S, priced at $19.99/£16.75/€19.50.
