Department of Health (National): Non-executive members appointed to the departmental board of the Department of Health

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has today announced his full team of non-executive board members.

Peter Sands and Chris Pilling join Mike Wheeler, Catherine Bell and David Heymann on the Departmental Board. Peter Sands will be the department’s lead non-executive board member.

Independent non-executive board members are apolitical appointments. The Department of Health Board is charged with overseeing governance and risk and advising on the financial management of the department.

Andrew Lansley said:

“I am delighted to welcome Peter and Chris to the Department of Health Board. Their skills, knowledge and experience will be a great asset to the department and will strengthen further our excellent team of non-executive members.”

Notes to editors

  1. The Department of Health Board meets quarterly and is chaired by the Secretary of State. Non-executive members are offered an honorarium of between £15,000 to £20,000 pa.
  1. Peter Sands and Chris Pilling have waived their fee. David Heymann, who is the non-executive Chair of the Health Protection Agency, is not remunerated for his role on the DH Board.
  1. The appointments have been made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
  1. Peter Sands was appointed Group Chief Executive of Standard Chartered PLC in 2006 following four years as Group Finance Director, where he had responsibilities for Finance, Strategy, Risk and Technology and Operations. Prior to this, Peter was a Director and senior partner with consultants McKinsey & Co.
