Career profile: Chelsie Miles, Offshore Administrator

A former student of Aberdeen College in Scotland, Chelsie Miles spent her early career in temporary roles before seeing an opportunity to establish her career in ship management with V.Ships Offshore. Joining us in 2015, Chelsie has just celebrated her first anniversary as Offshore Administrator and we caught up with her to find out how she was enjoying it so far.

Can you describe a typical day, if there is such a thing?

There are many aspects to the job however right now a typical day involves working on our new Offshore Vessel Management System (OVMS). I’m preparing all the documentation required for us to manage our client’s assets and then uploading to the new system.

So who do you interface with in that role?

As well as the V.Ships Offshore team I am working with our Compliance and IT teams who are based in Glasgow. They provide valuable support on the OVMS project including assisting with technical enquiries.

We noticed you’d published a celebratory message on LinkedIn about your one year anniversary – what’s made the job so enjoyable for you?

It’s about being part of a company where you aren’t just a name or a number on a card. I’ve had the opportunity to work with people across the wider V.Group and have established close working relationships with my colleagues here in Aberdeen and Glasgow. I really have enjoyed my first year and feel recognised and appreciated for my efforts – and I am being given the opportunity to learn and progress my career.

Who’s given you your best career guidance and what is the best career advice you’ve had, and why?

My mum has always been on hand to advise, guide and support me and the best advice I’ve had is keep talking, communication is key to success in business operations.

What’s the one piece of advice you’d give your younger self?

Dream big, if you believe in yourself, anything can happen. And I’m dreaming big with my favourite pastime – running. I’ve already taken part in a half-marathon and have my sights set on the London Marathon in 2017.

What would we find you eating at lunch time in the office?

Our office team is always on a diet so you’d probably find me with a bowl of soup or a salad.

Talking of food – if you could have dinner with three people who would they be and why?

David Attenborough because I love his shows, Richard Branson – he’s a successful businessman who has proven if you want something enough you will make it happen and Jennifer Aniston – she’s my favourite actress.

And after a hard day’s work – how do you relax?

When not running, I like to go for walks and then curl up on the sofa and watch a good box set series.
