Proactive approach enhances safety culture on board leisure vessels

A proactive approach to identifying and managing risks associated with work related injuries is enhancing the safety culture on board leisure vessels and contributing to a significant reduction of general accidents.

The Occupational Health & Safety Management Standard (OHSAS 18001) programme is part of the integrated Vessel Management System offered by V.Ships Leisure to their clients. “It’s compatible with ISO 9001 and the ISM code,” explains Francesco Santangelo, Marine Superintendent, OHS Fleet Trainer.

“The aim is to identify and minimise health and safety risks through improving seafarer awareness. However it only works because we are moving the conversation away from just meeting legal requirements to creating a safety culture, which benefits everyone on board, including passengers.”

Based on recorded data in the six months following implementation of the full programme, including on board training, there’s been up to 50 per cent less accidents and zero lost time injuries being recorded.

The whole programme is supported with a customised training package, which ensures greater involvement from the crew and shore management. “This complements our existing safety initiatives in place and overall improves seafarer morale and reduces the downtime and associated costs among many other benefits,” concludes Francesco.
