Network Rail announces major accessibility upgrade for Kings Langley station

Passengers at Kings Langley station are set to benefit from significantly improved accessibility as Network Rail prepares to deliver a major station upgrade funded through the Department for Transport's Access for All programme.

The £10.6 million scheme will provide a fully accessible route between the station entrance and every platform, making it easier for passengers with reduced mobility to use the station independently.

The project will see the installation of a new footbridge and three lifts, creating step-free access across the station while improving connectivity for the thousands of passengers who use Kings Langley station each year.

In addition to the new lifts and footbridge, the programme will include a range of improvements designed to enhance the station environment, including upgraded lighting, additional CCTV coverage, enhanced passenger announcement system, improved power supplies and the provision of fire refuge areas.

The project forms part of the Department for Transport's Access for All programme, which is delivering accessibility improvements at stations across the country to help create a more inclusive railway for all users.

Network Rail is working closely with London Northwestern Railway which manages the station, to keep passengers moving safely while these essential improvements are delivered.

"The new lifts and footbridge will provide a modern, accessible route between all platforms, making journeys easier and more convenient for passengers while improving the overall station experience."

Rail Minister Lord Hendy said: “New lifts at Kings Langley station will give passengers the step-free access they’ve long called for, helping more people travel with independence and confidence.

“With this Government’s support, London Northwestern Railway and Network Rail are working together to get this important project moving, which is exactly the kind of joined-up approach we’re building through Great British Railways.”

Work is scheduled to begin November 2026, with Network Rail working closely with local stakeholders, residents and train operators throughout delivery. Completion is expected by July 2027. Further information about the work, including any temporary changes required to facilitate construction, will be shared with passengers and the local community ahead of work starting on site.

Residents, passengers and local stakeholders are invited to attend a drop-in information event to learn more about the accessibility improvements planned for Kings Langley station. Members of the project team will be on hand to provide information about the scheme, explain what the work will involve, and answer any questions from the local community.
