  • Red Dot marks the spot - Umeå Institute of Design top ranked again

    Umeå Institute of Design has done it again! For the second time in a row UID is placed first on the prestigious Red Dot Institute’s ranking which is based on the school’s achievements over the past five years. The competitors are schools in Europe, North and South America.

    Designhögskolan har gjort det igen. För andra året i rad placeras skolan på första plats på Red Dot Institutes prestigefulla rankinglista. Rankingen baseras på skolans prestationer i designtävlingen, kategori Design Concept, under de senaste fem åren i konkurrens med skolor i Europa, Nord- och Sydamerika.

  • Charles Darwin, Alfred Wallace and now a Swedish environmental archeologist

    Philip Buckland, senior lecturer in environmental archaeology and deputy head at the Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Umeå University, has been admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society (FRES). A large number of internationally recognised entomologists, including Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace, have been and are, Fellows of the Society.

    Theatrical Fields examines artistic practice that make use of the theatrical. It brings together major video installations: “Voice off” by Judith Barry, “Suspiria” by Stan Douglas, “Sister Squares” by Marcel Dzama, “Lines in the Sand” by Joan Jonas, “Vagabondia” by Isaac Julien, “ X Characters RE(hers)AL” by Constanze Ruhm.     The Umeå Institute of Design at Umeå University was an overwhelming winner in the 2013 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA). They were more successful than prestigious design schools in China, the US and UK, and demonstrated once again that they are among the world's best in industrial design education.

  • Umeå School of Architecture releases its first international publication

    Umeå School of Architecture, UMA, at Umeå university launches the first international publication. The book Intravention, Duration, Effects: Notes of Expansive Sites and Relational Architectures is a carefully edited collection of work and research produced at the Laboratory of Immediate Architectural Intervention, LiAi.

  • New book analyses vampire fan fiction

    In the newly released book titled "Fanged Fan Fiction – Variations on TWILIGHT, TRUE BLOOD and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES", Umeå University associate professors of literature Maria Lindgren Leavenworth and Malin Isaksson examine the major phenomenon of vampire-themed fan fiction.

  • Umeå ecologist overthrows generally accepted principles in ecology

    Contemporary ecological theory assumes that differently sized individuals in a population are equally efficient in their use of food resources. But this is just an exception. It is much more common that ecological patterns occur in nature in conflict with these generally accepted rules. This is shown by Lennart Persson at Umeå university and André De Roos at the University of Amsterdam.

    Two respected international ranking systems have placed Umeå University among the world’s best under the age of 50 years, at #29 and #34. Umeå University is also the highest ranked institution in Sweden and the Nordic countries. These lists focus on young universities with great potential for the future.

    Every 20 seconds, a limb is lost as a consequence of diabetic foot ulcer that does not heal. To date, medical solutions that can change this situation are very limited. In his doctoral thesis,Yue Shen from the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics at Umeå University presented a novel medicine for chronic wound treatment that may completely change the lives of millions of patients

  • International students give Umeå University top marks for satisfaction

    Umeå University has been ranked first in Sweden and third in Europe for student satisfaction according to the International Student Barometer (ISB). The survey was responded by international students from 193 universities throughout the world during the autumn of 2012.
