  • International students at Umeå University most satisfied in Europe

    Umeå University has been ranked first in Europe and ninth in the world for student satisfaction according to the latest International Student Barometer (ISB). The survey was responded to by international students from 170 universities in the world during the autumn of 2013.

Harsh and cold climates don´t seem to stop alien plants from establishing themselves in high altitudes, where they now successfully penetrate the alpine vegetation, a study at Umeå University and University of Antwerp shows.

  • Kevin Gaunt winner of 2014 IxDA Student Design Challenge

    IxDA, the global Interaction Design Association, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have announced the winner of this year’s student challenge at Interaction14 in Amsterdam, a yearly conference for interaction designers. Umeå Institute of Design’s interaction student Kevin Gaunt from Switzerland impressed and was awarded first prize.

    Umeå University advanced seven places globally – from 34 to 27 – in this year’s 'Top 50 under 50' league table produced by QS University Rankings. The list focuses on young and dynamic universities established within the last 50 years.

    Professor Martin Karplus, one of the three Nobel Laureates in Chemistry 2013, will visit Umeå University on Friday December 13 to give a lecture on his groundbreaking research. Thanks to the methods he started developing in the 1970s together with Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel, today’s chemists can research in detail every little step in complicated chemical processes.

    Professor Martin Karplus, one of the three Nobel Laureates in Chemistry 2013, will visit Umeå University on Friday December 13 to give a lecture on his groundbreaking research. His visit to Umeå University is due to the fact that one of his former post doctoral students now works in Umeå.

    Umeå Institute of Design has done it again! For the second time in a row UID is placed first on the prestigious Red Dot Institute’s ranking which is based on the school’s achievements over the past five years. The competitors are schools in Europe, North and South America.

    Designhögskolan har gjort det igen. För andra året i rad placeras skolan på första plats på Red Dot Institutes prestigefulla rankinglista. Rankingen baseras på skolans prestationer i designtävlingen, kategori Design Concept, under de senaste fem åren i konkurrens med skolor i Europa, Nord- och Sydamerika.

  • Charles Darwin, Alfred Wallace and now a Swedish environmental archeologist

    Philip Buckland, senior lecturer in environmental archaeology and deputy head at the Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Umeå University, has been admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society (FRES). A large number of internationally recognised entomologists, including Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace, have been and are, Fellows of the Society.

    The Umeå Institute of Design at Umeå University was an overwhelming winner in the 2013 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA). They were more successful than prestigious design schools in China, the US and UK, and demonstrated once again that they are among the world's best in industrial design education.
