Nidec ACIM pushes the boundaries for a more sustainable future

Pordenone, 11th September – Nidec Appliance, Commercial and Industrial Motors (ACIM), a Business Unit of Nidec Corporation, has developed a comprehensive Sustainability Strategy that goes beyond corporate commitments, it is rooted in a global imperative that relies on sustainability as a catalyst for innovation and for a more fair, diverse, and carbon-free society.

Since last year, Nidec ACIM has relied on an internal committee - led by the CEO and President Valter Taranzano, along with his direct reports - to closely oversee this strategy. The exact same group validated the 2030 Targets, which are aligned with the business strategies, Nidec Corporation’s goals, and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a sustainable company, the first target is to achieve carbon neutrality in all its manufacturing plants by 2030, addressing both direct (Scope 1) and indirect emissions from electricity consumption (Scope 2). This is being pursued through the implementation of more energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy sources, optimized operational practices, and investments in off-site projects that reduce, remove, or avoid emissions. As a demonstration of this commitment, this year, one of its compressor plants, located in Brazil, was the first unit from the entire Nidec group to reach carbon neutrality in its operations.

The second target is focused on promoting gender equality, starting in leadership: the company aims to hold at least 25% women occupying executive positions, aligned with the belief that a more equal world can be also pushed by having more inclusive workplaces, which in its turn, provenly leverage innovation and growth. Achieving this goal involves the enhancement of HR processes across the entire career progression, implying attracting diverse talent, deploying development programs, and engaging employees through global and local initiatives.

In the third target, the company goes beyond its operations, by committing to reduce its customers' carbon footprint by one gigaton by 2030 — which is equivalent to the total annual emissions of Brazil, Italy, and France combined in 2022*. This target relates to the emissions generated by the use of ACIM products during their life cycle. The company is confident that this reduction will be achieved jointly with its customers, who have been also showing their commitment to moving towards a more sustainable approach.

Lastly, in the fourth target, the company aims to ensure that over 150 key suppliers will complete an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) self-assessment. These suppliers were selected based on their relevance to the business, being responsible for 70% of direct material spend. This target aims to stimulate responsible business practices and collaboration, creating a virtuous cycle of best practices that benefit both the environment and society at large.

“We are determined to achieve sustainable growth. ACIM products and solutions are integral to everyday life, present in homes, hospitals, supermarkets, industries and more, having full potential to significantly enhance energy efficiency and contribute to a more decarbonized world. At the same time, this point does not take away the responsibility to look inside our gates, where we are committed to leveraging equality while diligently working within our operations and throughout our value chain to ensure we are the preferred sustainable partner across the entire business cycle” - states Valter Taranzano, President and CEO of Nidec ACIM.

The 2030 Sustainability Targets were shared with the ACIM employees in June, and since then global, cross-functional working groups have been established to support action plans development. There are already initiatives in place and the company is committed to reporting its progress annually, ensuring transparency and accountability in its journey towards a more sustainable future.
