Nidec Inaugurates New High-Efficiency Compressor Production Line

With the presence of Santa Catarina’s Governor Jorginho Mello and Joinville’s Deputy Mayor Rejane Gambin, Nidec ACIM inaugurates a new production line for Embraco FMS, one of the most efficient compressors in the market.

Joinville, Brazil, 2025 – Nidec ACIM (Appliance, Commercial and Industrial Motors Business Unit) officially inaugurated a new production line for Embraco FMS compressors at its Joinville facility, one of the factories within the Global Appliance platform. The ceremony was attended by Nidec Appliance Automotive Division’s Director, Valter Taranzano, Nidec ACIM’s Director, Katia Drusian; and Nidec Global Appliance’s President, Alberto Casnati. Together, they welcomed government authorities and guided them on a tour, where they saw firsthand the production process of the FMS model and the company’s innovation and sustainability initiatives. The event, with the presence of Jorginho Mello, Governor of Santa Catarina, and Rejane Gambin, Joinville Deputy Mayor marked an ongoing dialogue between industry and institutions.

The new line will have the capacity to produce up to 5 million Embraco FMS compressors per year and will generate more than 220 direct jobs. According to Katia Drusian, the investment in the Joinville unit is part of Nidec’s global innovation and sustainability strategy. “By inaugurating this new production line, we are actively contributing to accelerate the production of more efficient refrigerators worldwide. More efficient refrigerators mean lower energy bills for families and lower emissions for the planet. What starts here in Joinville will reach customers and consumers in Brazil, Latin and North America, Europe, India, and Asia. This is the meaning of innovation with scale and purpose” she said. The executive also highlighted that the Joinville plant was the first within the Nidec group to be recognized as a carbon-neutral facility.

Alberto Casnati, President of the Nidec Global Appliance business platform, emphasized the importance of investing in increased production of the Embraco FMS: “By focusing on the production of the FMS, we take an important step toward the highest standards of energy efficiency, while contributing to the democratization of variable-speed technology in Brazil and around the world delivering more energy savings, lower noise levels, and advanced technology to end customers.”

A Sustainable and Efficient Compressor

The new line is dedicated to the manufacturing of FMS family compressors, which use variable-speed technology (also known as inverter) and stand out for their high energy efficiency, with a reduction of over 40% in energy consumption in some models. The FMS is also versatile, with a wide range of applications in the residential refrigeration market, from small wine cellars and beer coolers to large multi-door refrigerators. In Brazil, this compressor model gains additional prominence due to new energy consumption regulations, as it complies with the energy efficiency levels required by INMETRO starting in 2026.

Being only 12 centimeters high, smaller than a smartphone, the model is 33% more compact than its predecessor, freeing up more space inside the refrigerator and reducing carbon emissions, since more units can be transported per pallet and fewer resources are used in manufacturing. Another key differentiator is its use of natural refrigerants: the FMS runs on R600a (isobutane), which has near-zero global warming potential and does not harm the ozone layer. In 2024, 77% of Embraco compressors sold globally already used natural refrigerants.
