Press release —

Nidec Instruments to Start the Mass-production and Sale of MPT200, a Quality and Reasonably Priced Multi-payment Method Terminal

- Contribute to Improving the Retail Industry’s Checkout Congestion and Labor Shortage -
Nidec Instruments Corporation (“Nidec Instruments” or the “Company”) announced today the completion of the development of MPT200, a multiple-payment-method terminal for retailing and distribution that can read data of credit card-based contact payments, e-moneys, contact IC credits, and point cards among others, all by itself, and has launched its mass production and sales.

■ Background of the development of MPT200 and issues in the market
Recently, amid the rapid diversification of payment methods at Japanese retail stores, multiple dedicated data reader terminals have to be placed near cash registers for credit card contact payments, e-moneys, point-based services, etc. Not only have such many terminals inconvenienced users, but employees’ workload has also increased in the retail industry, which has been facing a serious labor shortage. Further, Japan’s conventional payment terminal market has been polarized between “high-quality domestic terminals with high introduction cost” and “inexpensive overseas terminals with durability and operability issues,” limiting choices for retailers with multiple stores to be able to use cost-effective and reliable terminals.

To address these social issues, Nidec Instruments embarked on the planning and development of MPT200. This new terminal will be sold widely in the global market as a standard product under the Company’s private brand.

■ Main features of MPT200 as a multi-payment-method terminal
Combining Nidec Instruments’ long-nurtured know-how on precision machine manufacturing, MPT200 is in a price range that helps its users to introduce it easily.

  1. Compact and stylish design with selected functions
In MPT200, functions already available in existing POS registers and replaceable with barcodes, etc. are non-existent by intention. Instead, this terminal has a concentration of “minimally required” functions exclusively for multiple payment methods. This functional selection enables MPT200 to be of an extremely compact, palm-sized design (approximate weight: 350g) and stylish – available in two colors (black and white) – to match the store’s internal view.
  2. High visibility and operability for quick, hesitation-free payments
MPT200’s 2.4-inch full-color liquid crystal display and surface tilted toward the user make the terminal significantly recognizable. In addition, MPT200’s clear interface without unnecessary keys helps its users make a payment smoothly and without hesitation even at the store’s peak times, requiring less manpower for store operations.
  3. Accommodating six international credit card brands and acquiring the latest security certification
MPT200 can read credit cards of all the six major international brands (i.e., Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover/Diners, and UnionPay), while complying with PCI-PTS v6.x, the latest credit security standard certification (with a future plan to comply with v7.x as well), securing high reliability.

■ Future prospect
With an annual target of shipping 30,000 units, the Company will launch MPT200 in the Japanese domestic market first, followed by the North America and European markets to sell the terminal globally. By utilizing its proven technological capability and innovative product development, the Nidec Group will remain dedicated to realizing a cashless society where everyone can use payment terminals comfortably and to sustainably improving the retail and distribution industries’ efficiency.
