Legendary maestro Riccardo Muti to conduct the 2013 Nobel Prize Concert

Nobel Media, in association with the Stockholm Concert Hall, presents the Nobel Prize Concert –  an event of world class stature. The concert will be held on 8 December as part of the official Nobel Week programme of activities.

Riccardo Muti will be conducting the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in a programme comprising Verdi’s “Le quattro stagioni” from Act III of I vespri siciliani (the Sicilian Vespers), Martucci’s Notturno Op.70:1 and Respighi’s Pines of Rome.

Riccardo Muti was born in Naples in 1941. He studied piano at the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella, and conducting at the “Giuseppe Verdi” Music Conservatory in Milan. In the 1970s he was principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He then went on to become music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and for almost twenty years from 1986 to 2005 the legendary music director of La Scala opera house in Milan. Since 2010, Riccardo Muti has been music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

In 2011, Riccardo Muti was awarded the Birgit Nilsson Prize, the world’s largest music prize, for his extraordinary contributions in opera and concert.

During his outstanding career, Riccardo Muti has conducted most of the world’s leading orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic – a list to which will now be added the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Nobel Prize Concert in Stockholm.

This year’s Nobel Prize Concert is the ninth in succession; previous soloists and conductors include Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, Lang Lang, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir, Martha Argerich, Yuri Temirkanov, Joshua Bell, Joseph Calleja and Christoph Eschenbach. The Nobel Prize Concert is held to honour the year’s Nobel Laureates, who attend with their respective parties. Also present are members of the Swedish Royal Family and guests of the Nobel Foundation.

Tickets will go on general release on 15 May.
