New study shows that CGMP helps increase microbiota diversity and promote specific health-related gut bacteria in a colon model of elderly gut microbiota

A recently published study suggests that gut health in healthy and frail elderly subjects may benefit from intake of casein glycomacropeptide (CGMP) due to its prebiotic activity. It is known that inferior health in elderly peopleis correlated with loss of diversity in the gut microbiota. In the newstudy, it was found that CGMP helps increase microbiota diversity and furthermore promotes specific health-related gut bacteria. The authors used an in vitro batch fermentation (artificial colon model) to simulate colonic fermentation processes. The faecal samples were collected from healthy and frail older people.

Commercial CGMP (Lacprodan® CGMP-10) and semi purified CGMP (lab produced) were used in the study.

The study was published in February 2017 and was conducted by Alexandra Ntemiri of the APC Microbiome Institute at University College Cork, Ireland, and is a part of a PhD programme funded by the Irish government, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. The PhD programme also includes a dietary supplementation trial in elderly people, where CGMP is also included.
