Probiotics: Not just any bacteria will do

Press Release   •   Apr 30, 2009 08:30 GMT

At this year’s Vitafoods trade show for the nutraceutical industry Chr. Hansen will be exhibiting probiotics for human health indications areas such as gastro-intestinal health, immune health and women's health.

“Although probiotic products have been marketed for decades we’re still observing some confusion regarding probiotics,” says Charlotte Beyerholm, Marketing Manager, Health & Nutrition Division, Chr. Hansen prior to this year’s Vitafoods event taking place in Geneva, Switzerland May 5-7. “With our ‘Not just any bacteria will do’ agenda for Vitafoods we will be explaining why Chr. Hansen is promoting probiotics on strain level.”

Health benefits are related to bacteria strain

“In short, Chr. Hansen agrees with leading researchers and associations, e.g. the International Probiotics Association and WHO, who advocate that probiotic health benefits are related to the bacteria strain, not the genus or species,” explains Beyerholm.

EFSA’s current review of health claims is increasing the awareness about documentation across the European nutraceutical industry.

Multiple dosage forms

Chr. Hansen assists in building supplement portfolios of safe probiotic solutions with documented effect. Customers can choose between multiple dosage forms (blends, capsules, chewables, sticks, etc.) for their products. “Visitors at our stand will have the chance to see and taste our newly launched probiotic sticks and chewable tablets,” Beyerholm says.

Documentation is key

Chr. Hansen supplies probiotics which have a documented effect. Documented effect means strain research and selection; published human clinical studies showing efficacy; stringent quality control and much more. Chr. Hansen has produced documented probiotics for decades. The Probio-Tec® range for dietary supplements includes our flagship strains — all with proven health benefits:

  • Bifidobacterium, BB-12®
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus, LA-5®
  • Lactobacillus paracasei, L casei 431®
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus, LGG®
  • Streptococcus thermophilus, TH-4®
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus, GR-1®
  • Lactobacillus reuteri, RC-14®

Chr. Hansen will be hosting a Supplier Seminar on May 5; the theme will be “Probiotics: Not just any bacteria will do”.
